CrossFit: What you MUST KNOW

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a strength, conditioning, and overall fitness program. It consists mainly of a mix

of aerobic exercise, calisthenics (body weight exercises) and weightlifting.

It aims to develop fitness in terms of the ten components of physical fitness: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy.

In other words, the workouts test a different part of your functional strength or conditioning, not specializing in one particular thing, but with the goal of building your body as a whole.

Benefits of CrossFit

Burn more calories

CrossFit workouts may help you burn more calories than other workouts. On average, we can expect to burn about 15 calories per minute, during a CrossFit circuit. There will also be an afterburn effect so you would still be burning calories after you end your workout.

Improve agility, flexibility and balance

CrossFit workouts includes exercises that mimic movements in everyday life. Functional movements, such as kettlebell swings, or overhead presses, can help improve agility, balance, and flexibility.

Improve physical strength

High-intensity and multi-joint movements in CrossFit can help you to gain muscle strength and stamina. Increasing the amount of weights in your workouts can further increase muscle gain by adding stress to your muscles.

Are there any equipment involved?

You might be familiar with some the equipment that are being used in crossfit gyms.

They use equipment from multiple disciplines, including barbells, dumbbells, gymnastics rings, rope climbs, pull-up bars, jump ropes, kettlebells, medicine balls, plyo boxes, resistance bands, rowing machines, and various mats.

Is CrossFit dangerous?

CrossFit is a high-intensity form of exercise. Your risk of injuries increases when you increase the intensity of your workouts or the amount of weight you’re lifting. Some of the common injuries includes lower back pain and knee injuries.

Beginners should go at a slower pace and increase the amount of weights gradually until your strength level improves.

How can I start?

If you’re interested in trying CrossFit, search for an affiliate box in your area. Most CrossFit centers require beginners to sign up for two or three private or semi-private training sessions.

If you’re new to CrossFit, its better to work with a trained professional that will make sure that you’re doing the exercises properly. By having improper form, trying to move through exercises too quickly, or lifting more than you can handle can all lead to injury.

Conclusion

CrossFit might be an effective way to lose weight, build strength, agility, and flexibility, and improve on your aerobic fitness. However, it might not be the best fitness methodfor everyone.
