Eat Smart: Why You Should Meal Prep

Updated: Apr 20, 2020

While Covid-19 keeps us at home, aren't you tired of take-out food or whipping up your own meal?

We have FUSED it up for you on 5 most important reasons why you should meal-prep to Eat Smart, Stay Healthy and Get Pretty:

1. You Will Save Time

Although you would have to invest some time to look through and prepare the recipes, meal-prepping can save you quite a bit of time when it is done properly and regularly.

Let's assume that you spend 3o minutes everyday cooking up a meal or going out to grab a bite. It will take you 5 days x 3 meals per day x 30 minutes per meal = 7.5 hours/week to settle your hunger. Now compare it to doing meal prep, it will only take you 2 hours to get everything ready for the week. You will be saving 5.5 hours a week and that is 22 hours a month!

This will leave you more time to do your work, watch an extra episode on Netflix or even do a 15-minute work-out. Besides, you will be able to cut down on the amount of dishes to wash as well!

2. You Will Save Money

Who says that it is too costly to eat healthy? All you have to do is to plan your meals ahead and make purchases in bulk. Then, you would not be subjected to spending excessively on take-out meals. Furthermore, you are effectively planning your finances by meal prepping.

3. You Will Lose Weight

If you think exercising is the only way to lose weight, think again. By planning your meals, you can know exactly how much food you are putting into your body to lose weight more effectively. You will have the flexibility to control your calories intake by choosing the right portion and nutrient-dense ingredients. Meal-prepping can help you achieve your diet-goals and you could even customize your food according to your taste, preferences and energy needs, says Kristen Wilk, M.S., R.D.N.

Furthermore, having a prepped meal will reduce your temptations and eliminates potentially bad decisions out of food. Monica Auslandner Moreno, M.S., R.D.N, L.D., the founder of Essence Nutrients, said that "When you're hungry at 12:30 p.m., you'll order or eat the first thing that crosses your plate. Having a prepped meal cuts back on food anxiety and insecurity, and ensures proper food decisions". Now, go pack your meals in containers and you would not eat excessively when your stomach is grumbling!

4. You Will Reduce Stress

Ever struggled to decide what to eat and where to go for meals?

Ever felt your hunger turn into frustration over the long waiting queues to get food?

Ever felt stressed about eating when you are on a diet?

Rest easy as having your meals prepared would solve your food decisions in advance! It will ease your stress levels as your meals are always ready-to-eat, while being rest assured that your calorie-intake is well-controlled. If you are new to meal-prepping, you will need to figure out how much portions to take, what do you actively want to eat,

what saves well (before it turns foul in your fridge) and what type of recipes work best for your lifestyle. With a little planning, you will create a week of stress-free meals in your fridge!

5. It is an Investment for Your Health

If you work on a hectic schedule, meal prep could be simply too taxing. However, investing in yourself and your health is more important than you think as research has shown that eating healthy will make you happier. A study conducted by epidemiologist Felice Jacka of Deakin University in 2012 found that a healthy diet is more therapeutic than having greater companionship. So why not take a step back from your busy lifestyle and eat your way to happiness!

In addition, as you prepare what to eat ahead of time, you are able to eat cleaner than those who don't. You would not be scrambling around to look for things to eat and risk being exposed to unhealthy options ( aka fast food or snacks) since your meal is already prepared! It may be hard to start, but once you have gotten into a routine, you’ll be able to beeline to the exact ingredients you need for your staple recipes!
