Getting started with Calisthenics

Previously we did a post on Calisthenics and what it is about, so if you havent seen it yet, do check it out here!!

How one can get started with calisthenics would be to really just get started and dive into it. You don't need any fitness or training background to start calisthenics and you should know by now that you can do it literally anywhere, as long as you have the space to do so.

Yes, there are some moves in calisthenics that would have some prerequisites to them (Such as planche, muscle ups, human flag etc). Those are higher level moves that would require hours and hours of training for one to get them.

Wait.. but seriously though, what should i start with?

Get started with the basics!

Some of the basics includes:

  • Push ups

  • Pull ups

  • Squats

  • Flutter kicks

  • Planks

Don’t worry about being all fancy. Most importantly, focus on executing it with the proper form, that way it would better build your strength and muscular endurance.

If you are a beginner, don't worry about not being able to hit as many reps, focus on doing it with the proper form instead! These habits would stick with you as you progress.

If you are unable to do a single push up or pull up, don't give up, there are alternatives to help you build the strength towards that!

For push ups, you can consider doing inclined push ups or push up with your knees on the floor. These suggestions would help you to build the strength towards being able to do a proper push up.

As for pull ups, you can consider doing negative pull ups (Jump and reach the top of the bar and slowly descend, repeat for at least 10 reps), or do assisted pull ups.

Be consistent

Completing one long and vigorous training session doesn't immediately make you strong!

The key is to be consistent!! Train with a proper schedule, with adequate rest & recovery time. So do alternate between the muscle groups that you are focusing on.

Even if it’s only 10 or 20 minutes, doing something is always better than doing nothing!! Someone who trains a little every day will ultimately accumulate much more training time and progress much more quickly over time as compared to another person who has a long and vigorous session once in a blue moon.

Seek greater heights

Throughout your journey, always try to be better than you were yesterday! Be it in terms of amount of reps or amount of sets you could do, or it could be learning another new move that is of a higher level. Always try to do better! Progressively overload and improve over time and you will see the fruits of your labour.

That being said, the enemy would always be complacency. Once we reach a certain level, we might get comfortable with ourselves and make "allowances" for ourselves. NO! You have to continue to get uncomfortable and push yourself further. That way, you would continue improving. Ever heard of the saying, achieving is one thing but maintaining is a whole new level?

Focus on yourself

This is very important. Doesn't matter what the person next to you is capable of. Even if you are unable to do what he/she can do today, as long as you don't give up, you will be able to reach there eventually! Don't compare yourself with others! Everyone is unique and our progress varies so do not get disheartened because of others!

Listen to your body

We all need a break here and there. Especially if you get injured, do not continue to push yourself as it would only make things worst! Take the time you need to recuperate and get back into the game after you have fully recovered!
